Celtic have reportedly tabled a second bid for Rapid Vienna Winger, Nicolas Kühn.

Kühn has certainly had an interesting career, having already played for both Ajax and Bayern Munich’s reserve teams, Jong Ajax and Bayern Munich II.

At 24 years old, Kühn has only completed two top-flight league seasons. In 16 Austrian Bundesliga appearances this season, Kühn has scored two goals and completed five assists, improving upon last season’s tally of just three goals and an assist in 20 league appearances.

In all 16 appearances this season, Kühn has played off the right wing. However, last season at Vienna in the Bundesliga, he played as an attacking midfielder three times and off the left wing twice, highlighting his flexibility playing in multiple positions.

Kühn’s underlying data suggests he is a creative winger with the ability to set up teammates on either foot.

The German winger’s expected assists (xA) tally of 0.27 per 90 stands out as a positive aspect, showcasing his creative abilities along with 2.12 chances created per 90. With Celtic for much of the season coming up against packed defences, Kühn’s creative threat would certainly come in handy in the second half of the season.

The Hoops, at times this season, have had to rely upon the likes of Mikey Johnston and Yang Hyun-Jun, who have both failed to impress, with Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda spending large spells out through injury.

An area where Kühn could certainly improve Celtic is chances created from the right wing and he appears more than likely to bring a special crossing ability, evident in a 38.1% cross accuracy this season.

Kühn’s season data draws attention to his impressive dribbling ability, highlighted in 3.66 successful dribbles and 5.92 touches in the opposition box per 90. With his superb pace playing a significant role in his dribbling, he possesses a level of speed that very few defenders in the Scottish Premiership can compete against.

However Kühn’s expected goals (xG) numbers are underwhelming, as he underperforms with an average of only 0.15 goals per 90, despite an xG of 0.26. This emphasises that if he were to join Celtic, there is a clear need for improvement in his finishing in front of goal.

In comparison, Celtic’s go-to winger, Luis Palma, maintains a higher goal-scoring average of 0.41 goals per 90 with an xG of 0.40. This stark contrast highlights the necessity for Kühn to significantly improve his shooting numbers to match Palma’s output off the left wing this season.

Overall, Kühn appears to be an exciting potential signing for Celtic, provided they can secure the deal. His addition could bring an extra dimension to the Hoops right-hand side, given his impressive one-vs-one dribbling ability and creative threat, especially in delivering crosses into the box.

However, it is crucial for Kühn to improve his goal-scoring numbers if he aims to live up to the standards set by the likes of Jota and Abada in recent years.

The prospect of Kühn joining Celtic introduces an intriguing blend of skills, and his adaptation to the Hoops’ style of play will be a key factor in determining his success in Glasgow if a move from Austria is completed.
